Leaf springs don't function on their own but rely on shackles as the leaves flex and compress when the vehicle travels over different road surfaces. Worn shackles lead to a rough ride, odd thumping noises, and the vehicle leaning to the sides. Damaged shackles can also lead to higher loadings and wear in other parts such as trailing arm bushings and the mounting brackets holding the control arms.
