Brake drums are a common feature on the rear wheels in some recent model SUVs and trucks and most vehicles before the 1980s. They apply adequate braking power in heavier vehicles traveling at slower speeds. Discs and brake pads are more common in most passenger cars. Both designs though produce corrosive brake dust that can hinder stopping performance, accelerate parts wear and be hard to clean unless you have fitted dust shields.
